The Adult Mental Health First Aid course is accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health and qualifies participants as Mental Health First Aiders.

This course teaches how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis to a person who may be experiencing a mental health issue. The course provides:

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing

  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues

  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress

  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening

  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mixture

MHFA’s are not counsellors or mental health professionals but are able to listen and support with signposting which needs careful boundaries and confidentiality.

The Mental Health First Aid course can be delivered either virtually, or in-person.

The virtual course is a blended approach of four individual home-working sessions (totalling 7 hours) and four instructor-led live sessions (totalling 8 hours).

The face to face course must be delivered over 2 consecutive days and has no independent learning element. All sessions are instructor-led and provide more time for group discussion work. Learning face to face also promotes better collaboration and care in this area between delegates.

  • Part 1 - Mental Health First Aid, mental health and depression.

  • Part 2 - Depression (cont.) and suicidal crisis.

  • Part 3 - Anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders and self-harm.

  • Part 4 - Psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The course is taught in small groups (a maximum of 12) so that attendees feel safe and supported while they learn.

Commitment from participants is vital and managers/leaders need to take this commitment seriously to embed the learning and role into an organisation. Participants must attend all scheduled sessions to become Mental Health First Aiders.

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A manual to refer to whenever you need it

  • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are a Mental Health First Aider
